Time is running out for talented songwriters in Scottish schools to enter Education Scotland’s Dare to Dream competition.

Secondary school aged young people from across Scotland are urged to enter a song by 22 January to win the chance to turn their winning song into a charity single for Children in Need 2016.

Entries to the Dare to Dream competition – run in association with the Artist Development Academy (ADA) – will be whittled down to a shortlist of 10 songs and published on the Dare to Dream blog. The songs will then be open to a public vote starting on 25 January and closing on 31 January, with the winner announced the following day on 1 February.

The winning songwriter(s) will work with ADA to discuss production and develop different versions of their song by 18 March.

Ron Cowie, Senior Education Officer at Education Scotland, said: “We’re urging young people across Scotland with a passion for music to get involved in the Dare to Dream competition and put pen to paper to come up with an original song by 22 January.

“The Dare to Dream competition represents a fantastic opportunity for young people in schools thinking about a career in the music industry to hone their creative and song-writing skills and gain valuable insight into the industry with the help of professional advice from the Artist Development Academy.”

The second phase of the competition, to find the best musical performers, is aimed at primary school aged children. This part of the competition opens on 22 April, with entries to be received by 10 June, before being open to a public vote with the winner announced on 20 June.

The winning songwriter will collaborate with the winners of the performance category to record and release the single to raise money for Children in Need 2016. They will also take part in live national performances including this year’s Scottish Learning Festival in September.

Children taking part in the competition have been asked to create learning logs to document their journey throughout the competition. Information on setting up a learning log is available on the Glow site in Office 365, which will require Glow login details to access.

Throughout the competition, ADA has provided free specialist professional music industry advice and guidance to help individuals, groups or whole classes pen their songs through video tutorials available on Glow TV’s catch up service.
